W. W. GREENER

Book - The Greener Story - by Graham Greener

It is surprising that the firm founded in 1829 by William Greener, author of three of the most influential books written on the subject of shooting - The Gun (1835), The Science of Gunnery (1842) and Gunnery in 1858, not to mention the famous Gun and its Development and many other books by his son, William Wellington Greener - has never itself been the subject of a book devoted to the company's history and the guns it made up to the present day. The Greener Story by Graham Greener, W W Greener's great grandson, fills this gap and is written and published for the benefit of the shooting fraternity, historians and the many thousands of Greener gun owners throughout the world. Part 1 describes the personalities, the skilled craftsmen, the move from Newcastle to Birmingham, the experiments and innovations - such as the expanding bullet, the system of choke boring to produce the best patterns of shot and one of the world's first reliable ejecting shot gun - and of course the ups and downs of family achievements, rivalries and disappointments. Part 2 deals with the guns themselves. Aided by hitherto unpublished photographs, the reader is given detailed accounts under such headings as muzzle loaders, breech loaders, Empire models, general purpose shot guns, miscellaneous guns and modern guns being made today. Technically illuminating and well illustrated, this will be of great value to gun owners, those wishing to purchase Greener guns, auctioneers, collectors and historians. Part 3 consisting of appendices provides information about dates of production, serial numbers, grades and models, patents and inventions, medals and awards, and a bibliography of books written by the Greener family.
